Is a trade war between Britain and the EU now inevitable? When The Times revealed that officials working for Liz Truss had drawn up legislation to gut the Northern Ireland protocol on Tuesday, some dismissed it as sabre rattling. But this morning comes more confirmation that some ministers really are serious.
This morning we publish legal advice from Suella Braverman, the attorney-general, to the prime minister on the plan. She has told No 10 that legislating to override the protocol would be legal on the grounds that the EU had implemented it in a “disproportionate and unreasonable” way, undermining the Good Friday Agreement and imperilling peace to boot.
